12/17 Archery and Rugby Details!

ARCHERY & RUGBY UPDATE

Saturday (12/17) at 2pm Meet in the Lobby of the YMCA in Barrington 2 until 4

We will be outside all day so scouts should dress for the weather (Live Check below)

It looks like it will be cold and dry so boots, snow pants, hats and mittens would be advised

Archery will be behind the building and then rugby will be on the outfield of the softball field that you see as you drive up to the Y.

Parents please be there a little early for pickup (3:30 pm or so) if they are leaving their scouts. Parents are welcome t0 stay for the activities.

The money (up to $10.00 per Scout) we collect will be donated to the YMCA's Financial Assistance Campaign. One of the ways they help the community through this campaign is to fund memberships for those who need them but cannot afford them.

Parent-Led Achievements

This is an excerpt from an email I sent at the beginning of this week. I will update these with the parents and scheduled dates as they come in.

Pat and I have sifted through the Achievements for the Bear Cubs for which we think parental leadership would do more than just take the heat off of us. Your participation will help our scouts, your scouts understand that we're all involved in making them successful in this endeavor and that we all can work together to get this admittedly long list of achievements under our collective belts. What we have compiled in this note (BELOW OUR SIGNATURES) are nine achievements one of which has already been fully assigned to the Sarli Family (#7 "Law and Order") and one partially (#22 - "Tying it All Up") that has been assigned to a family who's name I misplaced -- sorry)

What we need from you is to sign up to lead one of these achievements at a den meeting (which we will schedule ad-hoc to accommodate when you can slot this in). Please get back to me (Vince) with the one you want as soon as possible as well as a tentative month in which you can make this happen. To be fair, we need to slot it into our calendars and our achievement tracker. I'd advise you to look at the Barrington School Schedule to avoid any obvious conflicts we have in common.

We can also make this an "event." If you're concerned about the cost, we can reimburse most things from the Pack's funds. If you're concerned about a locale, we can manage that with you, if you're concerned about any of the other logistics (such as a release form or insurance form from the Pack, just ask). All we need you to do is to sign up to lead one of these events (multiple families can combine to run one). We've generated some suggestions below but we're willing to take "artistic" license around Achievement completion. If there is something in the "Electives" section that you might find interesting instead (I haven't outlined those), please do so, as these can be a ton of fun. For example, Ken Schneyer is working to schedule us time for the "Stars" elective at the Seagrave Observatory in Scituate in February.

ACHIEVEMENT OPTIONS & SUGGESTIONS

UPDATE: NOW A WARREN FAMILY LED EVENT
Achievement #5: Sharing your World With Wildlife
This activity (if the birdhouse construction was skipped) could consist of organizing a den visit the Audobon Society in Bristol, RI (401-245-7500) or other nature preserve in the area and do the following:
5c - talk to a wildlife conservation officer (or close proxy for one)
5d - visit the center
5e - talk about an extinct bird or animal

Achievement #7: Law and Order

ASSIGNED: Sarli Family

Achievement #11 Be Ready
This is a long list that sums up to fire, water, and home safety tips for the scouts
11a What to do in case of an accident at home
11b What to do in case of a water accident
11c What to do in case of a school bus accident
11d What to do in case of a car accident
11e Plan an escape route with your family -- have a practice drill at home
11f Have a health checkup (optional)

Achievement #14 Ride Right
- in addition to 14a as a "requirement" we need to complete three other requirements
Achievement 14b was fulfilled by attending the Bike Rodeo at the beginning of the year. If not, a simple "dexterity" ride with a parent or adult partner will suffice
This might be a good one for a parent who can go over how to maintain a bike and change a tire or someone who knows someone at a bike shop who might want to come to someones house to talk about bike safety -- or if its better -- go over to their shop. Any bike shop would love to have an opportunity to get parents and kids to "browse". "

Achievement #15 Games, Games, Games -- We need to complete two requirements -- this might even be a good one to try at the YMCA
15a Set Up the Equipment and play any two of these games with your family or friends
15b Play two organized games with your den
15c Select a game that your den has never played -- explain the rules, tell them how to play it and the play it with them. (leader's note -- this one is interesting, in preparation for this event, we could send a note to the scouts and have them come up with a game, announce it, describe it and vote on it and the supervising parent helps them through it)

Achievement #17 (Part One): Information, Please
We are looking for a parent to help arrange a visit for the scouts to a newspaper office, or a TV or radio station and talk to a news reporter.

Achievement #19 "Shavings and Chips" -- or as we like to call it, "Knives at 9"
Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn made it in fiction, who's to say the kids can't do it? This achievement has a lot of "responsibility-setting" in it and, given that it has knives involved -- Pat and I will help you along the way with this one.
19a - A Review of the Safety Rules
19b - Sharpening the Knife
19c - Making a Carving (creating the shape from a traced pattern -- pre-work for the even)
19d - "Knives are not Toys" and the "Pocketknife Pledge"

UPDATE: NOW A SULLIVAN FAMILY LED EVENT
Achievement #21 (Part One): Build a Model

The scout must complete three requirements (and 21g is a required requirement).
While this seems like a thing a scout could do on their own, I think if the den did one big scene (i.e. someone does the landscape, someone puts together a model on the landscape, the display could be landscape or a wooden frame around it.... we could take a picture of it and have it forever (versus in some one's garage forever). Nothing is saying that a scout who wants their own model cannot do it because they want to - more than the three count towards an "arrow."
Anyway, here are the achievement sub-components...
21a - Build a Model from a Kit
21b - Build a Display for one of your models
21c - Draw a Layout and Plan to Move Furniture in one room in your house (on paper)
21d - Make a Model of a Mountain, Meadow, Canyon or a River
21e -Go to see a model of some architectural thing that's to be built (a paraphrase from the book)
21f - Make a Model of a Boat, Plane, or Car
21g - (required) Thinking and Contemplating about Achievement #21 (can be done aloud)

UPDATE: KREUZKAMP FAMILY LED EVENT (DATE TBD)

Achievement #22: "Tying it All Up" (ASSIGNED)
-- The scouts need to complete five of these six requirements. I'd recommend doing the first five and, if the scouts are adventurous on their own (and with a parent or adult partner) they can indeed complete achievement 22f, "Make your own rope." This achievement has a neat rope throw in it so it might be a good one for March! If the weather holds up in February and we can work around the winter break but March or April might be good for this one.

UPDATE: Now a MacGillvray/Hoder/Sullivan - Led Event on 12/13/08 2pm at the YMCA!!

Achievement #23: Sports

This one requires the scout to perform all five of the achievements but the parent-led event really can involve two of the requirements
  • 23a Learn the Rules of and learn to play three team sports and
  • 23b Learn the rules of two sports in which there is only one player on each side)

Bear Cubs Home Achievements

There are 10 Home Achievements for the Bear Cubs in Pack 1 this year. Those achievements that should be completed at home are (with some suggestions) 1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 12, 13, 17, 18 and 21.

There are “Electives” this year as well. These are activities that enable scouts to win arrows. More information can be found in the Bear Cub Handbook on pages 180 and 181.

Here is the list of ten achievements that you need to complete at home with your scout

Achievement #1 Ways We Worship
  • 1a -- Faith
  • 1b - Worship

Achievement #2 Earn the Religious Emblem of your Faith (Optional if you want to complete 1a and 1b)

This is obviously a personal one but one that this achievement covers. This one is one that we trust that you will work out with or without the emblem. This one is optional because these programs should be presented to scouts and their families to complete through your religious organization. It’s the all around feeling that religious instruction should always come from the religious organization, not from the den or pack.

Achievement #3: What Makes America Special
Here, item (a) and (j) are requirements. The scout only has to do two others
One must note, that at our last campout, the scouts did attend/participate in a flag ceremony (3i)
The others are
  • 3a What Makes America Special To You
  • 3b Find out and talk about two special Americans (more in the book)
  • 3c Find out something about the old homes near where you live -- see two of them
  • 3d - Find historical places near your home or town -- visit them
  • 3e - Investigate a State and some key things about the state (see the book)
  • 3f -- Be a member of a color guard
  • 3g - Display a US Flag; fly it on three national holidays
  • 3h - learn how to raise and lower a US flag properly
  • 3i -- Participate in a flag ceremony
  • 3j - Reflective Citizenship discussion with parents
Achievement #6 -- Planet
This is about recycling and energy conservation; studying it and understanding how it impacts your world and your home.

Three of these requirements (out of seven) need to be completed by your scout.

Achievement #9 – What’s Cooking?
Here the scout has to accomplish four things to complete this achievement
  • 9a - Bake Cookies
  • 9b - Make Snacks for the next den meeting (bring them to whatever meeting you like)
  • 9c - With an adult, prepare one part of your breakfast, one part of your lunch, and one part of your dinner
  • 9d - Make a list of the "junk foods" you eat -- discuss it with a parent

Achievement #10 Family Fun
These two achievements are simple
10a Go on a day trip or an evening out with your family - and think about behavior before, during and after the even (the book goes into more detail)
10b Have a family night at home or make something with your family

Achievement #12. Family Outdoor Adventures
We're out with the scouts all the time -events, picnics and the like. This event is really about the scout helping lead one of those events with your family. This achievement includes
12a Go Camping with your family -- because the scouts need to go to our campouts with a parent, for all scouts who plan on going to one of the events with their parents (past and upcoming) this meets muster for "12a"
For the rest of these items -- this could just be one outdoor event now or in the spring.
  • 12b - Go hiking with your family -- if you went hiking on that trip with a family member during that last camping trip -- this counts as well)
  • 12c - Have a picnic with your family
  • 12d - Attend an outdoor event with your family
  • 12e - Plan your outdoor family day -- this can be wrapped into the previous activities.

Achievement #13. Saving Well, Spending Well
Some of these, our scouts have done with us at least once. There are seven here, your scout only needs to complete four.

Achievement #17. Information Please
We are going to see if we can complete 17c through a parent activity but we still must complete
  • 17a (REQUIRED); with an adult in your family, choose a TV show and watch it together
  • 17b play a game of charades with your family
  • 17d Use a computer to get information. Write, spell-check, proofread, and print out a report on what you've learned.
  • 17e this can be combined to complete 17d -- write a letter to a company that makes something that your scout uses (the scout does this), use email or the US Postal Service
  • 17f talk with a parent of other family member about how getting and giving facts fits into his or her job
Achievement #18 Jot It Down
We need to do achievement 18h and four other requirements for a total of five requirements out of eight possible.
  • 18a - Make a To Do List
  • 18b - write two letters to relatives or friends (emails more than an instant messages will do)
  • 18c - keep a record of daily activity for two weeks
  • 18d - write an invitation to someone (email counts as well)
  • 18e - write a thank-you note
  • 18f - write a story about something you have done with your family
  • 18g - write about the activities in your den
  • 18h - complete the character section for honesty (required)

Achievement #21 (Part Two): Build a Model
By now, the scout will have built their pinewood derby car. Now they can complete achievement 21g and one other requirement
Options include:
  • 21b - Build a Display for one of your models
  • 21c - Draw a Layout and Plan to Move Furniture in one room in your house (on paper)
  • 21d - Make a Model of a Mountain, Meadow, Canyon or a River
  • 21e -Go to see a model of some architectural thing that's to be built (a paraphrase from the book)
  • 21f - Make a Model of a Boat, Plane, or Car using whatever you want to build it
  • 21g - (required) Thinking and Contemplating about Achievement #21 (can be done aloud)
Achievement #23 'Sports"

While 23a and 23b can be accomplished via a den event, the remaining events can be fulfilled at home with parents or the family. Those are
  • 23c Take part in an individual or team sport
  • 23d Watch a sports even on television
  • 23e Attend a sporting event
